Computer Language

The Chinese Room fails to produce understanding. Computers are “formal” in that they receive and respond to a string of symbols without paying any attention to the meaning of those symbols. Computer programs are purely syntactical because they only use formal symbol manipulation. Simply running a computer program cannot create understanding of meaning. Minds can have mental states that have meaning. Utterances and inscriptions can have meaning only derivatively in terms of how they were intended by the speaker and interpreted by the listener. Humans can receive and respond to the content of symbols in language because of words’ meaning, not just because of their physical appearance. The thought experiment includes the broader claim that one cannot get semantic meaning from syntax. Syntax is neither sufficient for, nor constitutive of, semantic content. While computers can receive syntax and produce an appropriate syntactical response, they do not understand the sentences they receive or produce because they cannot understand the meaning of the words used. Thus, computation is not sufficient to produce thought.

Solopsistic Anxieties of a Dystopic future by L. Mascatello

Trade has been replaced by currency. Paper replaces coin and credit replaces paper. Digitized debts, prioritized and intangible, will enslave us all.

Credit scores and social security numbers. Name: last, first. Everything everyone ever did on one big database floating in cyberspace.

Our identities, fragmented and tangential as they may appear, will continue to drift further and further from our bodies. Our bodies are made increasingly obsolete by the automated manifestations of mechanical knowledge. Function and intention will collapse onto one another as our socialized reality is reduced to the head of a pin. Strike here, anywhere else is failure.

People will cease to fan out and will continue to stack and compartmentalize. your pastiche will expand beyond the confines of your mind and body and will dissolve into the meta-sphere of digital mush.

The illusion of choice and opportunity grows as our connectivity becomes more and more schizophrenic. We are communicating, but with whom we cannot be sure. Live streaming audio and video, mutual masturbation, tracked and codified by the illusory means of liberation. We are reduced to ciphers, all which was once essential to the person has been outsourced, improved and dissociated.

Living has become not only an imitative process, but also an adaptive one. We imitate identities that are successful. Whether dissident or steadfast, personalities themselves have become microcosms of a greater hegemonic process of consumption. We adapt to fit into the metaphysical schema of “what is,” (empirically) as a means of survival and distinction. As time progresses adaptation (to the word around us) becomes a mere imitation of the imitative average. Pop culture is a growing collection of imitable identities. In this way popular culture, the spectacle, the public, has become hypotonic, so bloated that it has no choice but to grow. We inversely become hypertonic, so drained of particularity and meaning that we can only contribute to the larger sum. The quantification of said contribution (to the faceless whole of pop culture) is the currency with which identity will be assessed.

The greatest value a person can have is therefore not intrinsic or even directly communicable, but is in fact accessed through a circuitous displacement in the matrix of the simulacra. It is not the vivacity of the object/idea but, much like a star, the luminescence of said object/idea in space.

The future: bleak

pure genius

What’s Happening Right Now (An Anti-Manifesto on Music) By Thom Bettridge

Music is governed by time. Both culturally and ontologically. You are governed by time in the same way. Music isn’t an object. It has no mass but the medium through which it’s conveyed. You are an object. You have mass and you have media through which you convey yourself. Here in lies the problem.

You and music are incompatible. What’s the solution to this? You are an object. And music is nothing. You are the medium through which nothing flows. What’s happening right now? The music you’ve already heard isn’t anything anymore. You look for what is contemporary. And the second you find it, it becomes history. You search again. For a fleeting object that never existed.

Music is nothing and contemporary is nothing. That is what’s happening right now: Contemporary Music: zero multiplied by zero. Keep your headphones on. Keep an eye out for something new. Dissolve into oblivion.

Various Artists / From The Basement [2009] [DVD]

From Nodata:
There is no audience, no big production, no small talk with a host. The acts go into the studio, set up and play their hearts out in front of the cameras.

No audience. No hype. No smoke and mirrors. Just an intimate look at these bands in a studio doing what they do. Superb camera work. Superb sound. Good mix of artists. On a good quality upscaling DVD player this disc looks and sounds almost as good as blu ray.

Filmed in high-def at Maida Vale studio, London (where many Peel sessions were recorded) for TV and podcast. Very high quality surround sound, intimate closeups, *no studio audience* — just bands playing music.

solopsism in space

There are several means to alleviate the tendency toward the solipsism syndrome in the extraterrestrial communities:

  1. A large geometry, in which people can see far beyond the "theater stage" of the vicinity to a view which is overwhelmingly visible.
  2. Something must exist beyond each human's manipulation because people learn to cope with reality when reality is different from their imagination. If the reality is the same as the imagination, there is no escape from falling into solipsism. In extraterrestrial communities, everything can be virtually controlled. In fact, technically nothing should go beyond human control even though this is psychologically bad. However, some amount of "unpredictability" can be built in within a controllable range. One way to achieve this is to generate artificial unpredictability by means of a table of random numbers. Another way is to allow animals and plants a degree of freedom and independence from human planning. Both types of unpredictability must have a high visibility to be effective. This high visibility is easier to achieve in a macrogeometry which allows longer lines of sight.
  3. Something must exist which grows. Interactive processes generate new patterns which cannot be inferred from the information contained in the old state. This is not due to randomness but rather to different amplification by mutual causal loops. It is important for each person to feel able to contribute personally to something which grows, that the reality often goes in a direction different from expectation, and finally that what each person takes care of (a child, for example) may possess increased wisdom, and may grow into something beyond the individual in control. From this point of view, it is important personally to raise children, and to grow vegetables and trees with personal care, not by mechanical means. It is also desirable to see plants and animals grow, which is facilitated by a long line of sight.

  4. It is important to have "something beyond the horizon" which gives the feeling that the world is larger than what is seen.
